Dozer, the Tortoise
Meet Dozer
Dozer is a Sulcata tortoise, the third largest tortoise of his kind. He was born in 2004 and has been on Maui since he was the size of refrigerator magnet. When he was 2 years old, he suffered an accidental near-death encounter with a dog. After years of recovery, he still has the scars but has fully recovered. Now, 20 years later, he survived the Lahaina fire with severe burns to his face and legs. Dozer is coming through just fine, feeling well and enjoying this new chapter of his life
Dozer is lovingly cared for by the beloved Lahaina Bird Stand. For over two decades, the Lahaina Bird Stand was a beloved attraction on Front Street in Lahaina, bringing joy to visitors from around the world. After the tragic Lahaina fire in August 2023, we’re grateful that they made it to safety—and even more grateful to now host them at South Maui Gardens.
Just a few important reminders for our guests visiting the gardens, do not put your hands and feet in Dozer’s enclosure. Also, do not feed Dozer as he has special dietary needs. Mahalo for your understanding to keep everyone safe and happy!
